Artist's Statement
Phillip Gulley
I’m an interdisciplinary artist working primarily with media and performance. My work is often collaborative – I collaborate primarily with musicians, combining video, music, and text to immerse audiences in layered, atmospheric multimedia experiences. Using commercial and original software I take simple ideas and histories, like sad stories, industrial films, or commercials, and merge them into narrative driven experiences. My goal is to engage the audience into an active dialogue where their response to the work is as vibrant as the pieces themselves.
I make work that investigates wrong turns and the displaced. I have squandered money on foolish nights. I have fought friends and better decisions searching for something more brilliant. I have woken with questions that I know I will dislike the answers to. I am richer for these small catastrophes. We make tumultuous glorious mistakes. This process tempers us, heating and cooling us like an alloy. We try, fail, live, and do it again and again: complicating our stories into something that will hopefully, one day, be beautiful.
I attempt to illuminate the parts of us that have been reworked and nearly broken, to see the terrible things that had to happen to develop these resilient parts. I explore themes such as the mechanics of our lives, the routine of sexuality, the commoditization of relationship, and the standardization of love. We are such immaculate machines. These things have color. These things have sound. These things tear us apart and remind us that we have indeed lived.
