‘Hotel Savoy’ Casting Call for non-actors: Looking for a “Group”

A narrative installation to take place in conjunction with Performance Space 122 and the Goethe Institut NYC is looking for cultural or social groups to join 5 non-actors at 1014 5th Avenue, a six-floor mansion located directly across from the Metropolitan Museum, for an interactive performance for audiences of one. This project is an exploration of space and memory; it is a slice of the diversity of New York; it is a series of real conversations in a frame of experience. We are searching for people of diverse cultural background to help realize an artistic vision. No acting experience is necessary. We are simply trying to create a genuine atmosphere of real interactions.

The ‘group’ we are looking for is as follows:

The Group

We are currently looking for a “group”. This group will represent New York City’s ability to welcome varied cultures and embrace them while allowing each to maintain a strong sense of their background and history. The conceptual purpose of the group’s inclusion in Hotel Savoy is to display the fact that to be a New Yorker you do not need to be from NY, that we are living in a truly international city, a melting pot big enough to welcome outside cultures and develop its own unique flavor.

The group will consist of four to five individuals, of any cultural background, ranging in age from 20 to 30. The Group will be placed in a room where they will be free to chat, play games, check their phones, etc. One of the members of the group will be aware of the cycle of the piece and direct the group to exit the room for a moment and then direct them back into the room every seven and a half minutes to interact with a new patron. The patron will be introduced to the group, offered tea, and watch/participate with the group for a few minutes, then the patron will be told to exit the room.

Additional Information on Structure:

The show itself would open September 28th and run through October. This does not mean rehearsals will happen up until October, in fact there will be very few rehearsals since the project is founded on real conversations in a devised framework. The group would only be called to performances.

The general structure of the work consists of seven and a half minute interactions with audience members in a structured frame creating a narrative. The five non-actor-performers will lead the audience through the building, handing them to the other non-actor-performers or leading them to the next section of their experience. The group is one stop in that experience, a glimpse into a social scene. For the audience members the total run of the show is one hour.

The group will not be expected to join us every night. We are looking to rotate members of the group and perhaps the organizations represented. We are happy to involve as many people as possible and do not expect major time commitments unless that is the wish of the individuals.
